Multicloud and cloud storage

More and more businesses are moving servers from the basement up into the cloud, and for many, the goal is to have all storage and development take place here, eventually. But it doesn’t stop at that. One cloud has turned into many, and what was previously an innovative idea has now become a reality for many Norwegian companies.

In other words, more and more companies are realizing the fact that multicloud, or the use of multiple cloud platforms, most likely is here to stay.

Multiple cloud platforms provide security

So why do multicloud solutions represent the future? The answer you’ll get will most likely depend on whom you ask. There are several reasons why companies choose to use more than one cloud platform. For some it is a matter of security or cost, for others, it is about having the possibility for interaction between the various platforms that they have deployed, instead of moving all the solutions to one platform.

– Many of the companies I talk to find it risky to place all their critical data with one cloud platform provider. Therefore, they wish not to be tied to one particular player and want flexible solutions, says Morten Forfang, Technical Director at Computas.

However, this is not the only answer to why multicloud solutions are solutions for the future. Today, almost all modern problem-solving is performed using different software. Thus, in order to solve new problems, we are completely dependent on the infrastructure for the software we use in order to handle the huge amount of data that we collect. Multiple cloud platforms strengthen the infrastructure and enable innovative use of software and analysis of large amounts of data.

Multicloud requires expertise

There are many advantages to using multiple cloud platforms, but it is not easy to build solutions that function optimally on several platforms like this. The big players have not exerted the extra strength to make it easy for the ordinary man or woman to use multiple platforms at the same time. To them, it is after all an advantage if all their users are loyal and use the player’s solution exclusively.

Thus, building solutions that can be used on more than one platform requires advanced competence, while managing the solutions requires quite a bit of work. At Computas, we help our customers find solutions that meet the particular needs and offer advice on how each company should relate to the principle and the technology behind multicloud.

Hafslund uses multiple cloud platforms

For Hafslund, the choice was easy. When all of Norway’s two million mechanical power meters were to be replaced with advanced measurement and control systems (AMS), the company switched to a multicloud solution.

– In 2014, it was a simple choice when launching the project, to gather everything in the cloud. And it was not very difficult to go for more than one cloud platform, in our case Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform. Because, with such large projects, it is rarely worthwhile to deal with only one cloud provider, says Ståle Heitmann, head of IT and digitization in Hafslund Nett.
