4 Security Risks of Staying on Atlassian Server

After February 15th, 2024, Atlassian will cease support and upgrades for its Server products. This means that those who still have Confluence, Jira, or JSM on the Server platform will no longer receive standard technical support, security updates, or vulnerability fixes. Renewing, expanding, or reducing the number of licenses for the core products will also not be possible.

Migrating to the cloud is a comprehensive process that requires resources and good planning. While it may be tempting to postpone the migration, it is highly recommended to meet the deadline. There are significant security risks associated with not doing so.

4 Big Security Risks

By remaining on unsupported server products and apps, the business is at risk of things going wrong. For example:

  1. Vulnerabilities left Unpatched Expose your Business to Security Threats.
After February 15, security updates will no longer be provided for server products. Without updates, vulnerabilities will remain unaddressed, making it easier for malicious actors to target and gain unauthorized access to your data and systems.
  2. Violation of Privacy and Compliance Regulations
The use of unsupported products can violate privacy and compliance regulations, especially in tightly regulated industries such as healthcare and finance. These sectors have strict rules to protect sensitive information and privacy. By using unsupported software, the risk of attacks increases, which can lead to violations of regulations and result in legal consequences and fines.
  3. Downtime and Potential Data Loss
Another potential consequence is significant downtime. Unsupported software exposes you to risks of both internal and external actors unintentionally or intentionally disrupting your systems. This can potentially lead to data loss or manipulation, and in the worst case scenario, render your systems completely inaccessible.
  4. Marketplace Apps are Not Supported Either
You can no longer purchase new apps for existing server licenses. However, Marketplace partners are also not expected to provide technical support, security updates, or vulnerability fixes, which again significantly increases the risk.
